Safe Amalgam removal – Mercury-safe procedures

Overview

At The Home of Biological Dentistry, we safely remove mercury (amalgam) fillings using the highest standards of care and protection. All protocols are designed to prevent exposure to mercury for both patients and staff.

Our Protocol

For over 50 years, techniques for balancing chemistries during amalgam removal have been refined. Only methods that assist detoxification and reduce exposure are included; all others are discarded.

Pre-treatment Preparation

  • Activated charcoal: Taken 10–15 minutes before removal to bind small swallowed mercury particles. Less than 2.5% of ingested mercury is absorbed. This is provided by the practice during appointment.
  • Cracked-cell Chlorella: A natural chelator, second only to coriander. This is provided by the practice during appointment.
  • EDTA magnetized water mouth rinse: Rinse for at least 1 minute before removal. This is provided by the practice during appointment.

Isolation with Latex-Free Rubber Dam

  • Prevents direct contact with mercury.
  • Enhances evacuation of amalgam particles to avoid ingestion or tissue embedding.
  • Provides a dry field for placing new composite or ceramic restorations.
  • Some teeth (e.g., third molars) may not allow rubber dam; in these cases, clean-up suction, EDTA rinse, and charcoal are mandatory.

Oxygen and Air Management

  • Nose hood attached to oxygen: Patients breathe only through the nose during removal.
  • Air purification: Negative ionizers, Himalayan salt, and ozone purifiers in all rooms.
  • High-volume evacuation: Suction tip maintained 2–3 cm from filling; two suctions used simultaneously.
  • Cooling the filling: Chunking and water/air cooling minimize vapor release.

Personal Protection

  • Full coverage of face, hair, eyes, airway, and body for both patients and staff.

Detox Support

Post-Removal Excretory Support

  • Perspiration: Daily exercise or sauna to remove toxins via sweat.
  • Bowel movements: High-fiber diet or fiber supplements; IMD (Intestinal Metals Detox) recommended.
  • Kidney function: Drink ~2 liters of clean water dail
  • Post-treatment chelation therapy is recommended.

Optional/Additional Care

  • Replacement materials chosen for biocompatibility (ceramic preferred over “white” fillings with BPA/fluoride).
  • Blood chemistry monitoring for dietary and supplementation guidance.
  • Acupressure and massage to aid nerve-muscle interactions, calcium metabolism, and lymphatic drainage.
  • Avoid Vitamin C orally on the day of dental procedures to prevent interference with anaesthetic.
  • Avoid codeine post-procedure due to nausea and constipation risk.
  • IV must not contain Vitamin B12, as it can interact with methyl mercury.

Health Benefits of Amalgam Removal

  • Neurological: Improved emotional state, motor function.
  • Cardiovascular: Reduced risk of endocarditis or valve issues.
  • Collagen/Connective Tissue: Scleroderma, arthritis, lupus improvements.
  • Immunological: Better immune function.
  • Allergies: Reduced reactions from food, air, and environmental triggers.

Important Notes:

  • Fillings carry electropositive or electronegative charges; removal order affects outcomes.
  • Four states have legislation regarding mercury safety and patient information.
