Porcelain-Zirconia Bridges
What is a Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge is a fixed (non-removable) appliance used to replace missing teeth. It is a reliable and effective solution to fill the gap left by missing teeth, restore function, and maintain facial aesthetics.
While traditional bridges are commonly made of porcelain fused to metal, often using a Nickel alloy, this can involve potentially harmful materials with carcinogenic and DNA-altering properties. At The Home of Biological Dentistry, we prioritize your health by using Zirconia — a highly aesthetic, durable, and biocompatible alternative. Zirconia bridges are the most popular choice for those looking for natural-looking results without compromising on strength or health.
Why Choose a Porcelain-Zirconia Bridge?
Zirconium (Zirconia) fixed bridges are a popular option because they offer several benefits:
- Natural Appearance: Zirconia closely resembles your natural teeth in both color and translucency.
- Biocompatibility: Unlike metal alloys, Zirconia is completely biocompatible, meaning it does not release harmful substances into your body.
- Durability: These bridges are highly durable and can last many years, though like all dental restorations, they may eventually need replacement or re-cementing due to normal wear.
Reasons for a Fixed Bridge:
A dental bridge is typically recommended for the following purposes:
- Fill the gap created by missing teeth.
- Maintain facial shape and prevent sagging or sunken cheeks.
- Prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position, which could lead to further dental problems.
- Restore chewing and speaking ability that may have been compromised due to missing teeth.
- Enhance your smile and overall appearance.
- Upgrade from a removable partial denture to a more permanent dental appliance.
- Alternative to implants when an implant is not feasible due to certain health or financial reasons.
What Does Getting a Fixed Bridge Involve?
Getting a fixed dental bridge typically requires two or more visits:
- Preparation of the Anchoring Teeth: During the first visit, the two anchoring teeth (abutment teeth) are prepared. This involves removing a portion of enamel to allow space for a crown.
- Impression (Mold) Creation: A highly accurate impression is taken of the prepared teeth, which will be sent to our Master Technician, Mr. Johan Havenga, to craft the custom bridge. Additionally, a temporary bridge is placed to protect the teeth and gums while the permanent bridge is being made. The temporary bridge is worn for about a week until your next appointment.
- Placement and Adjustment: At the second visit, the permanent bridge is carefully placed. The dentist checks for proper fit and adjusts the bridge if needed to ensure comfort. In some cases, the bridge may be temporarily cemented first to give your teeth and gums time to adjust before the final cementing.
- Final Cementing: Once you’re comfortable with the fit and appearance, the bridge is permanently cemented into place.
Post-Treatment Care:
After the procedure, it is essential to follow care instructions to ensure the longevity of your new bridge:
- Proper brushing and flossing: Brush your teeth and floss under the bridge to prevent plaque build-up and ensure good oral hygiene.
- Regular dental visits: Follow-up appointments are important to monitor the bridge’s condition and make any necessary adjustments.
By maintaining proper oral hygiene and visiting the dentist regularly, you can extend the life of your Porcelain-Zirconia Bridge and enjoy a comfortable, functional, and beautiful smile for years to come.
